In this picture, the hull of the boat, the bank and the buildings and the frame anchor the picture to create a sense of direction.

The line of windmills on the bank of the dike are approximately in a straight line which is strengthened by the position of the sails. The bank adds a base for the windmills.

This picture of the auction was taken from above. The lots were laid out in lines and the auctioneer came to each box in turn. People could wander up and down the lines looking in the boxes. The people add movement to the picture.
